Least Restrictive Environment

The concept of "least restrictive environment," as used in the context of a special education discussion, means that a student who has a disability should have the opportunity to be educated with non-disabled peers to the greatest extent possible. This means that they should have access to as much of the general education curriculum, extra-curricular activities, and any other "normal" programs as is feasible.

Four factors are generally considered when determining the LRE for a particular student:

  1. Educational benefits of integration versus segretation
  2. Non-academic benefits (socialization)
  3. Effect of student on teacher and peers
  4. Cost of supplementary services
